The hospital which took me in after I collapsed from the fist sized tumor over my heart, released me after refusing to diagnose it as cancer, which would have forced them to give me some kind of treatment. The doctor at the county hospital which took me in looked at their tests and said, “this is CLEARLY cancer, why didn’t they diagnose it? We can’t let you leave.”

Hospitals find ways when they want to, to avoid helping people when they want to.

“Oh that’s illegal, you should sue” “ with what money and how will I get the time and energy when I’m busy recovering from chemo?”

People who can’t afford treatment also can’t afford to protect their rights.

All, this, but also: having the ER be people’s only point of access is horribly financially irresponsible.  It means that people have to go to the ER for every problem if it’s the only place that won’t turn them away, so they go there for an ear infection or a sprained ankle and rack up a bill that’s ten times higher than if they’d been able to go to an urgent care clinic or a regular doctor’s office.

That’s a huge waste of money and resources.  And when people can’t pay that giant bill, it drives up everyone’s healthcare costs.  Even if you don’t care about human beings at all, you should still care about this completely irrational situation where we’re losing large amounts of money because we refuse to offer people more affordable access to care.

Also, there are things the ER simply can’t do (or does very poorly and expensively), including:

- Preventative care like vaccinations, cancer screening, or prenatal care.

- Rehabilitative care like PT after an injury.

- Long-term care for people who aren’t able to take care of their own daily needs.

- Care for any chronic condition that isn’t a crisis at this moment.

So yeah, not only is “you can just to go the ER” not a real solution for healthcare, but it’s more expensive than universal access to regular doctors would be.  The US government spends more on healthcare than countries that have universal healthcare!  We’re not saving money with our system, we’re actually wasting money to inflict deprivation on people.

I recently wrote a letter to my representative about why this is a problem and said we needed universal health care, and my teacher said we already had it and I had to change it to “we need extended universal healthcare” even though three of my four parents work in the medical profession, and two of them work everyday with people who struggle to afford the care they are getting under our “universal healthcare” and flat out told me we dont have universal healthcare and my teacher was wrong. One of my point was exactly as stated above, the ER is not beneficial as a primary care provider because they aren’t equipped to handle that stort of stuff. They’re equipped to handle EMERGENCIES.

if you’ve seen the breaking news that trump just signed an executive order today to end the family separation policy here’s some quick info to keep things in perspective

  • this doesn’t end the “zero tolerance” policy of prosecuting anyone who crosses the border “illegally” 
  • the only thing this changes is that going forward, entire families will be detained together while awaiting prosecution 
  • this offers no solution for freeing the thousands of children currently held in ICE child prisons or any path to reuniting them with their families 
  • children will still be detained and treated as criminals
  • this will likely lead to thousands of families being held in ICE facilities and tent cities that will face the exact same issues of overcrowding, abuse, and inhumane conditions that exist in the child prisons

this is not a victory or a solution. This is the administration trying to cover their asses and avoid any more public outrage. They want people to see this as the end of the news story and go back to their lives. They want people to forget the thousands of children they are still keeping in cages in ICE facilities across the nation. This issue is not over and we cannot stop being outraged until we are given proof that the thousands of kidnapped children are returned to their families, and that the policy of arresting and prosecuting people who cross the border is ended.
